One of the main reasons why Rick Yancey write the book the fifth wave was for his love for science fiction novels. As a kid he knew that he wanted to write these kind of novels. He loved to to read these type of books, and watch the science fiction movies, "even the bad ones in outer-space (Sun-sentenial)."
Another reason for writing this book was when Rick Yancey read an interview between Stephen Hawking and a BBC official. Hawkign was saying that if aliens camde to this planet then they would probably try and destroy our civilization first then the peiople, that is exactly how the book went, so Rick was majorly impacted by that interview.
